Metamorphosis

In a brief comedy sidebar, here are some hilarious pictures of me.

The first two, when compared side by side, remind me of a “Where are they now?” type programme on celebrities who have fallen from grace.
Or maybe a poster you’d find in a high school espousing the dangers of meth abuse and what it does to you.

Or possibly a Jekyll and Hyde style metamorphosis from normal to peculiar…

Looking back at other pics, I have decided to compile the following timeline of my slow descent from cute child to total nutter purely for your amusement, dear readers. After all, it is Halloween today, so how better to celebrate than witness one woman’s descent into madness… And also it turns out this is my 250th post! For other hilarious and oddly vain posts, have a look at The Many Comedy Hairstyles of Maya….

Here I am looking adorably cute and normal, aged 5 or 6 I think…

Note the trendy velour tracksuit top, and the jeans with a 6-inch hem of “growing room”

Of course, even at that age I was showing signs of being a bit peculiar… Continue reading

Blog Hiatus

Ooops!

It seems I have forgotten all about my poor blog for the last 5 months, and left it shamefully alone and neglected.

Luckily I have the odd post I drafted a while ago and never got around to posting, so will now attempt to post a few of them and liven things up a bit in this corner of the internet!

While you’re waiting for some deep insights into the aid sector, here’s one of the best things I’ve spotted in Tacloban so far. I literally laugh out loud every time I drive past this place.

More random things that made me laugh…

Wow – one of my older posts, Reasons why I love the Philippines, seems to have gone a bit viral today (someone clearly shared it on facebook) and I’ve now had over 1,000 views in a day! Madness! I suddenly feel strangely popular and powerful at the same time – it’s like I’m wielding all this internet power using only my words on a blog – MWAH HA HAAAAA!

Ok, enough mad laughter, people in the office are starting to stare… Instead, here are some more random things I’ve seen this month that make me smile.

Happiness, and other YouTube videos…

So, while on holiday I had plenty of time to fall down an internet hole and trawl the web for fun and interesting things…

This brilliant video, courtesy of UNDP and Pharrell Williams, shows perfectly the fantastically upbeat spirit of the Filipino people, always ready to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and start rebuilding, with a smile on their faces. I’ve already watched it about 8 times and it still makes me smile. The perfect antidote for the post-holiday blues!

While we’re on the subject of YouTube videos, here’s a few more that caught my eye.

This equally brilliant but far more depressing video from Save the Children tries to show people in the UK what it would be like if something like the situation in Syria happened to us, through the eyes of a child. Depressing but incredibly moving and sadly a stark reality for thousands of Syrian people in the last 3 years.

And on a more cheery note, this hilarious video of Things Cats do that would be creepy if humans did them. Cracks me up.

While we’re on the subject of funny things, this list of poorly chosen book titles made me laugh out loud too.

And how could I forget the fantastic Philomena Cunk’s Moments of Wonder? Genius.

So, those are a few of the things I found on the interwebs this month that made me laugh, smile, and think.

Now go watch the Happy video one more time to cheer yourself up!

Maya’s comedy hour…

Well I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have plenty of ridiculous comedy moments while attempting to go about my business and appear somewhat professional along the way….

You can read the highlights of my comedy moments here, but since then there have been a few additional things that I thought you might all appreciate!

A couple of weeks ago I went to a meeting at the Department of Agriculture, where they were bringing in all 40 of the Municipal Agricultural Officers for a big meeting on rice seeds, fertilisers and discussing recovery plans for farmers. So there I am sitting at the table surrounded by important people, rooting around in my bag for a pen, and out flies a tampon and lands pointedly in the middle of the table. Rather awkward.

The Philippines in shorthand…

As I have struggled to write coherent blog posts in any semblance of order, and so much is happening it’s all starting to sound a bit disjointed and confusing. Have just looked back through some facebook posts and realised it’s easier to be funny in short random posts.

So, here is a taster of my first few weeks in the Philippines, as seen through my facebook status updates:

20th November:

Another long, hectic, but fascinating day… Off to bed now, but getting up again in 4 1/2 hours to go to a distribution… My current checklist of things not to forget at 3.30am includes “Big truck, little truck, van full of cardboard boxes…”   🙂

Reasons why I love the Philippines…

I’ll be adding to this list over the next few months, so feel free to check back in, but here are some reasons why I love the Philippines so far:

#1 – The incredibly welcoming, smiley, upbeat, optimistic, helpful, friendly, immensely resilient people.

#2 – The fact that they don’t really seem to have a word for “hello”. The closest they have is “Have you eaten yet?” (Kama-in Kannaa?). A people after my own heart.

#3 – The fact that they eat 5 or 6 times a day and take snacktime very seriously.

#4 – The fact that when I jokingly complained about missing snacktime during a 4-hour car journey, I was informed (in a very serious tone) “Well actually Maya, it’s dinner time now, not snacktime. But you can have two desserts because you missed your snack.”

#5 – Sea crabs cooked in sprite.

#6 – The fact that somewhere in Cebu City there is apparently a reggae-themed seafood restaurant called Bob Marlin. My new mission in life is to find it….

#7 – This headline: P1100657 Continue reading
